It gradually got worse till the point where it became unusable as apps were crashing relentlessly. I brought it to the genius bar. They said the hard drive was a lemon and replaced it. Well that fixed absolutely nothing. Took it home and had the same problems so I decided to start running some anti-malware software. Adware medic, Sophos, Avast, Clam and a couple others. They all found infected files and deleted them. This helped immensely and now my computer is running ALMOST perfectly. I feel it still isn't 100%. It's still slightly laggy to open drop down items from big folders, I get the occasional little glitch like a program not responding, some plugins I have are a glitchy and cause my software to crash but I think that's just cause they were buggy to begin with. My main concern is when I run Avast it says there are hundreds of files it cannot scan. Are these malicious? Avast Scheduled ScanHow did I get rid of them? If they are not the culprit, then what else can I do to make my mac run perfectly? Are there any better antivirus programs that I am unaware of? Avast Scan NowEh, that won't work (or at least I doubt it would), even if you remove the System Restore Component from Windows you still cannot access that folder, the only way to access it is to change the user rights. Simply: Press Start -> Run -> Type 'explorer.exe' Click on Tools (at the Top) -> Folder Options -> View -> Click the Option 'Show hidden Files and Folders' and uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)' Now simply click Ok. Next Click on My Computer -> C: You should see a folder with the name 'System Volume Information', it's sort of shaded, different from other folders. Right click on it -> Click Properties -> Security Tab -> Click Add -> Click Advanced -> Click Find and click on the name 'Administrators' Now Click Ok and Ok Again. In this pane click on Administrators and click on the checkbox next to Full Control. Now click ok. All the way out. You should now be able to access the folder, if not then you ALSO need to disable System Restore. Only 'NT AUTHORITY' has full access to that folder (by default), so unless your Anti-Virus installs on Kernal level it (funny how anti-virus programs emulate viruses) will not be able to scan it, but I DOUBT there would be a virus there (unless it, itself is a rootkit, then maybe).
